The risk of fraud and other acts of wrongdoing by both internal and external sources exist in every organization. The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) estimates that organizations lose seven percent of their annual revenues to fraud.

The survey also found that fraud schemes tend to be extremely costly with more than one-quarter of frauds exceeding $1 million. For many public organizations, financial losses relating to fraud will pale in comparison to the impact on the organization’s reputation.
